It all began with an idea to travel more, connect more, and fuel our desire for adventure. Our love for cars, morning rituals, and the dream of the unexpected led us to create Field Study Coffee. We wanted to create a place where wanderers, regulars, and all who wanted to step into the unknown were welcome. After realizing we wanted to create a coffee experience that wasn’t rooted in a single location and could operate in almost any place in the US we realized we needed a vehicle that could match our desire. Our goal is to serve the most delicious coffee by the beach, in the woods, under the stars, or in the desert.

We began scouring the internet for all type of vehicles new and old. From pick-up trucks to VW vans- we just couldn’t pin point the exact vehicle that translated our thoughts correctly. We wanted a rugged yet posh SUV or truck that could hold all our coffee gear and take us to the most remote environments imaginable to truly make Field Study Coffee rooted in the unknown and ready to take on any challenge. We knew we wanted something vintage as none of the new vehicles had been tested over the course of time. Firstly, Toyota came to mind so many reliable and good looking options from the 4Runner, Wagoneer, to the Sequoia and Land Cruiser but they didn’t give us the exact feeling we were looking for. Something fit for royalty that could also take us off the beaten path. We then realized the Land Rovers distinguished history of being the utility off roader of the kings and queens of England would do just that! We wanted our coffee to be fit for the most discerning in the world and knew the Range Rover classic moulded generations of cars and stamped its shape into history.

And so it began.. we researched everything there was to know about the Range Rover Classic the issues, the solutions, the restoration work necessary to make this vehicle suit all of our needs and wants and finally what to look out for to ensure we purchased a Rover that would lead us into the future successfully. Now for the hardest part- finding one. As most of the Range Rovers from the 1990s had extreme rust, had fallen into disarray or were way out of budget. At the time of our search there were about 3 in California and roughly 20 or so around the US. We didn’t have many options and some sellers were not the most receptive to our negotiations. But, we pushed through and found a pack of Rovers that had been imported from Madrid, Spain that were in excellent condition. No rust due to the Spanish climate, fully mechanically restored, and shown the amount of care required to keep a 30 year old vehicle in excellent condition. We took delivery of a 1995 Range Rover Classic in Epsom Green. The newest Range Rover Classic ever made and the last year they were ever in production.

Now it was time to start pulling the best espresso in the west with natural syrups, locally sourced pastries and become the purveyors of excellent specialty espresso drinks, pastries and most importantly be able to serve coffee anywhere. See you on the road. - Stephen
